Paying a Chinese supplier should take two minutes. In real life, it is where importers quietly lose money: a hidden exchange-rate margin, a transfer bounced for one wrong letter in a company name, or a "new bank details" e-mail that turns out to be fraud.

This guide compares the three services small importers use most to pay suppliers in China: Wise Business, Payoneer and Airwallex, on published prices for a USD 10,000.00 order. The short answer: Airwallex has the lowest published cost for CNY, Wise is the easiest if your country is supported, and Payoneer wins when your supplier already uses it.

In 30 seconds

  • Cheapest published price for CNY: Airwallex, about USD 50.00 on a USD 10,000.00 payment.

  • Fastest when your supplier is on Payoneer: Payoneer, within hours.

  • Simplest for occasional orders: Wise Business, unless your company is in the UAE or Nigeria.

  • Biggest hidden cost: the exchange-rate margin, not the transfer fee.

How to pay a Chinese supplier: USD or CNY?

You pay either in USD (to the supplier's USD account) or in CNY (to their yuan account in Mainland China). The currency on your contract and invoice decides which one.

  1. Check the invoice currency. If the contract and invoice are in USD, send USD. Wise itself advises this for USD invoices.

  2. Check the supplier's account. A CNY payment must go to a CNY business account in Mainland China; Wise only pays CIPS member banks.

  3. Match the name exactly. The beneficiary name, in Latin characters, must match the bank account name, or the transfer bounces. Use the legal name on the supplier's business licence, and ask for the CNAPS code used for Mainland bank clearing.

  4. Choose the right transfer reason. For goods, select "Pay for goods"; Chinese rules require a declared purpose.

  5. Keep your contract and invoice ready. The supplier's bank may ask for them before crediting the funds.

The real cost of a transfer is the fee plus the exchange-rate margin. A "zero fee" transfer with a 3.00% margin costs you USD 300.00 on a USD 10,000.00 order.

Compare providers on the conversion margin first: it usually costs more than the visible transfer fee.

When to pay: deposit, balance and inspection

Choosing the service is half the job; choosing when to pay protects your money. The most common terms are 30% deposit, 70% balance, with the balance paid against an inspection or the shipping documents (Epic Sourcing).

30/70 payment terms · deposit, inspection, balance

The inspection is your last lever: once the balance is paid, a defect becomes your problem. A pre-shipment inspection by a third party costs far less than a container of wrong parts. Never accept 100% upfront from a supplier you have not worked with before.

strengths and limits · Wise, Payoneer, Airwallex

Wise Business: the easiest way to send CNY to China

Wise Business sends CNY straight to a supplier's yuan account in Mainland China, with no limit on the amount or number of CNY payments, usually within 1–2 working days (Wise help).

  • Good for: small and medium orders, importers who want a simple calculator showing the total cost before paying.

  • Watch out: CNY sending is not available from several countries, including the UAE, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey and Vietnam. The recipient must be a CNY business account at a CIPS member bank.

  • Cost: Wise shows the exact fee and rate in its calculator before you pay. Check it for your amount and currency on the day.

Payoneer: best when your supplier already uses it

Payoneer's "Make a Payment" pays suppliers with or without a Payoneer account; between two Payoneer accounts the money arrives within a few hours (Payoneer). Many Chinese suppliers who sell abroad already have one.

  • Good for: suppliers who already use Payoneer, and importers who also receive payments on Payoneer.

  • Watch out: currency conversion is charged up to 3.00% on its pricing page, and an annual fee of USD 29.95 applies if you receive less than USD 2,000.00 in 12 months (Payoneer pricing).

  • Cost: Payoneer's example shows zero fees on a USD 10,000.00 payment to a supplier, but its pricing page does not list the fee for every payment type. Check it in your account.

Airwallex: the lowest published rate for CNY payments

Airwallex publishes the clearest price: a 0.40% margin above the interbank rate for CNY and USD, and a 0.10% fee on CNY payouts, on its Singapore fee schedule (Airwallex fee schedule). It pays Chinese suppliers through its local network where possible, and about 90% of transfers are processed within a few hours to one business day (Airwallex).

  • Good for: importers paying regularly in CNY, from a company in Hong Kong, Singapore or another supported country.

  • Watch out: a payment that goes by SWIFT costs USD 20.00 (shared fees) or USD 35.00 (you pay all fees). Prices vary by the country of your account.

  • Cost: the free Explore plan has no monthly fee; paid plans start at USD 79.00 per month.

How much does it cost to send USD 10,000.00 to China?

On published prices, Airwallex costs about USD 50.00 to pay USD 10,000.00 in CNY; Payoneer can range from zero to USD 300.00 depending on the route.

How we compared: published fees and margins on each provider's own pricing pages, for a USD 10,000.00 payment converted to CNY. Prices checked on 30/10/2026. They vary with your account's country and change often; confirm before paying.

Worked example: one order, two ways to pay

Example scenario. An importer in Casablanca orders USD 10,000.00 of auto parts from a Guangzhou factory, paid in CNY on 30/70 terms.

Same order, same supplier: USD 250.00 difference. On ten orders a year, that is USD 2,500.00 left on the table just by choosing the wrong route.

Paying a Chinese supplier from Africa or the Middle East

Most guides are written for buyers in the US or Europe. From Africa or the Gulf, three things change.

  1. Some services block your country. Wise Business cannot send CNY from the UAE, Nigeria, South Africa or Turkey (Wise help). Check the country list before you open an account.

  2. Your own country's rules come first. In countries with foreign-exchange controls (Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and others), import payments usually go through your local bank with an import file opened in advance. A foreign company and a neobank do not replace that for goods you import at home. Ask your bank and accountant first.

  3. First payments get checked harder. A new supplier's first payments and unusually large amounts often trigger extra compliance review (XTransfer). Send the first deposit a few days earlier than you think you need.

Not sure which company structure fits your trade? Try the Setup Route Finder: seven questions, and it suggests Hong Kong, Dubai, a US LLC, the UK or Estonia, with the bank that goes with it.

5 mistakes that get supplier payments rejected

Most rejected payments to China come from a currency or name mismatch, not from the payment service. One wrong letter in a company name is enough to send your money back.

  • Paying CNY to a USD account, or the reverse: the transfer is rejected and refunded late.

  • A beneficiary name that does not match the bank account exactly.

  • Paying a new supplier's personal account: insist on the company account named on the contract.

  • Bank details changed by e-mail: call the supplier on a known number before paying; this is the most common fraud.

  • Ignoring the exchange-rate margin: compare the total received by the supplier, not the fee.

Two habits that stop most fraud: send a small test payment to any new account before the deposit, and confirm every bank change by phone, never by e-mail alone.

If a payment still goes wrong, act in this order (Epic Sourcing):

  1. Ask your bank or payment provider for a recall the same day.

  2. For Alibaba orders, open a Trade Assurance claim.

  3. For larger disputes, arbitration in China (CIETAC) or the courts, if your contract allows it.
